Volcanologists watch how volcanoes act. Volcanologists also study old rocks and hardened layers of ash from eruptions long ago. From these clues, they figure out how many times a volcano has erupted.
In 1978, two scientists found out that Mount St Helens was one of the volcanoes in the Unite States most likely erupt. They predicted that the volcano might erupt before the year 2000. They were right Two years later, Mount St Helens blew up!
